Everything you need to know about OverClean
OverClean is a native macOS disk space analyzer built with SwiftUI. It features a visual dashboard with pie charts, scans your directories, and categorizes files into 26+ types. It includes an Applications Manager to identify space-heavy apps and Leftovers Detection to find orphaned data from uninstalled applications.
Yes, OverClean is completely safe. It only analyzes your disk and generates reports — it does not automatically delete any files. You always have full control over what gets removed from your system. The app is also notarized by Apple.
OverClean supports macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) and later. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3) and Intel processors as a universal binary.
Simply download the DMG file, open it, and run the app directly from the disk image. No installation required — OverClean is portable and leaves no footprint on your system.
To uninstall OverClean, simply move the app from your Applications folder to the Trash. To remove all associated data, also delete the OverClean folder located at ~/Library/Application Support/OverClean which contains the scan database and settings.
OverClean is currently available as a free preview. Download and try all features at no cost during the preview period.
The free preview is a fully functional and free version for early adopters. This version, which is currently on the site marked as "free preview", will never ask you to pay for it. The release of a paid version will be announced separately. It will definitely be something like "a cup of coffee and only once within major updates", meaning until a major upgrade.
OverClean automatically detects 26+ categories including: Media (images, videos, music), Documents (PDFs, Office files, archives, books), Development (Git repositories, node_modules, Python venvs, Xcode projects), System (caches, Docker data, iOS backups), and Games (Steam, gaming platforms).
After the scan completes, you'll see a category picker at the top. Each category shows files of a specific type found on your disk.
Quick wins for freeing space:
- Caches — Usually safe to delete. Apps rebuild them as needed.
- Javascript — Old JavaScript/Node projects can be huge (100MB+ each).
- Xcode Derived Data / Android Build — Safe to delete, regenerate on next build.
- Python Virtual Environments — Old .venv folders from finished projects.
- Docker — Use Docker Desktop's Disk Usage extension to clean up. Native cleanup coming soon.
- Downloads folder — Organize using category downloads or recursive directories.
Be careful with:
- Documents — Review before deleting.
- Git Repositories — Ensure they're pushed to remote first.
- Music / Videos / Images — Personal files you may want to keep.
Tip: Sort by size (largest first) to find the biggest space hogs — often a handful of large items account for most wasted space.
